Overview

This article relates specifically to the Telstra NBN Service Type. If you are selling Telstra NBN services, there is specific information in this article related to those services.

These DHCP-based services have a unique ID that is used as the core identifier. This is referred to as an AVC number and represents the primary identifier of the (aka the username).

DHCP Allocation

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used in Layer 2 (Ethernet) services in order to provide a mechanism to provide an IP address and bring up the Layer 3 (IP). Normally this happens in a Local Area Network (LAN) where packets are broadcast to the entire network for a DHCP Server to receive and broadcast back a response.

In the case of NBN type services, the traditional approach of having a service need to 'authenticate' is not used. Instead, they use a DHCP process to the network aggregate who will then forward via a DHCP relay (like 'FreeRADIUS'). Or they may use Network Address Translation (NAT) to forward the packet onto Emersion directly.

Emersion presently uses FreeRADIUS] to receive these packets and verify the Circuit ID in our database, and to return IP address details.

Service Configuration

During the service configuration step in the Order process, or later under the Service Subscription > Configuration section, users will need to set the following fields:

  • DHCP_GROUP_NAME
  • DHCP_IP_ADDRESS
