Overview

This page provides a way for users to override a rate in a Rate Card for a telephony service. The price entered a rate here will only apply to the service subscription in question. To override rates in a Product Rate Card users need to go to the Product Rate Override sub tab.

A service subscription is - in business terms - a single subscription to a service plan that belongs to a customer. Service Plans that customers subscribe to can be telephony-based, data-based or something else entirely. In the case of a subscription to a telephony-based service plan, prices for individual tariffs are set in the rate card. This feature provides a way for users to override the sell price of a particular tariff for this customer's subscription.

For more background and understanding of service plans and rate cards, see the links at the bottom of this article.

To access this screen users have one of two pathways:

Nav: Customer > List

  1. Click on the ID of a customer to open the customer record.
  2. Click the Service Subscription tab to open the customer's service subscription.
  3. Click on the Rate Overrides tab.

Alternatively, users can:

Nav: Services > List All

  1. Click on the Service ID or Service Subscription ID link to open the customer's service subscription.
  2. Click on the Rate Overrides tab.

The Rate Overrides tab of a service subscription

The procedure for adding a rate override is the same as adding a new rate to a rate card, only you're applying the rate to only this service subscription.

Add a Rate Override

To add a rate override, start by selecting the tariff. There are two ways to search.

  • Step Through the Tariff Hierarchy
  • Search by Tariff ID

When you have found the tariff and rate you want to override, create a new rate here. This rate will be used in place of the rate in the rate card.

How to add a rate override is exactly the same process as adding a rate in a rate card. If you need to know more about how to add rates, see the links at the bottom.

Mediated Tariff

Rate Overrides must be applied to the Mediated Tariff to work correctly. This is slightly different in operation to a regular rate card.

When we identify calls against a tariff via the carrier's tariff key, we call this the mediated tariff. If you have a rate set against this mediated tariff, the system will rate accordingly. If no rate is found against this tariff, it will loop up the tree until it hits a rate. It's this parent tariff that we would then call the Rated Tariff.

Using the below example tariff tree extract:
Rate-override-001.png

Scenario 1 | No rate overrides found - use standard rate card

  • A call comes in on tariff key 14021 (Directory Assistance 1223). Imagine you do not have any rate overrides set.
    • The Mediated Tariff would be ID 550580 (Directory Assistance 1223)
  • In the standard rate card, you have a rate set on Tarrif ID 550578 (Directory Assistance), but not any of the child rates - let's say $2.50
  • As there are no rates set on the Mediated Tariff, the system has had to loop up the tariff tree to find a rate.
    • The Rated Tariff would be ID 550578 (Directory Assistance)
  • The system will rate this call at $2.50.

Scenario 2 | No mediated tariff rate override found - use standard rate card

  • A call comes in on tariff key 14021 (Directory Assistance 1223).
  • You have set a Rate Override on tariff ID 550578 (Directory Assistance)
    • The Mediated Tariff would be ID 550580 (Directory Assistance 1223)
  • In the standard rate card, you have a rate set on Tarrif ID 550578 (Directory Assistance), but not any of the child rates - let's say $2.50
  • As the Mediated Tariff does not match the rate override tariff, no tariff tree lookup logic is employed at this point. Effectively, the system just does not use an override and moves onto the next stage of rating.
    • The Rated Tariff would be ID 550578 (Directory Assistance)
  • The system will rate this call at $2.50

Scenario 3 | Mediated tariff rate override found - use override rate

  • A call comes in on tariff key 14021 (Directory Assistance 1223).
  • You have set a Rate Override on Tariff ID 550580 (Directory Assistance 1223) - let's say $0.50c
    • The Mediated Tariff would be ID 550580 (Directory Assistance 1223)
  • In the standard rate card, you have a rate set on Tarrif ID 550578 (Directory Assistance), but not any of the child rates - let's say $2.50
  • The Rate Override Tariff now matches the Mediated Tariff (being 550580)
    • The Rated Tariff would be ID 550580 (Directory Assistance 1223)
  • The system will rate this call at $0.50c (the override rate - without even looking at the service plan rate card at all)
