= Overview =
A service is exactly as it's name implies. It's some sort of service (or 'thing') that is provided to a subscriber (customer) by another party (supplier/service provider). What is essential to understand about a service in Emersion, is that a customer has a ''subscription'' to it. It is not something that is purchased outright, via a payment plan or via any other method.

To take it out the abstract and into reality, it makes sense to consider it in relation to it's related objects, a Service Plan and a Service Subscription. Here are some examples;

=== Case 1 ===
* A Service plan: 12 month domain hosting costing $250.00.
* A Service subscription: A business customer (Johnson Consulting) has subscribed to the above service plan. The subscription period is 12 months and the customer is expected to renew their subscription at the end of the 12 month period.
* A Service: the domain name they have subscribed (johnsonconsulting.com.au).

=== Case 2 ===
* A Service Plan: A 24 month plan for ADSL2+ costing $50 per month and includes 800 GB data. Excess usage is charged at $10 p/GB.
* A Service Subscription: A residential customer has subscribed to this service plan. They are in their 4th month of the 24 month subscription. They are billed $50 monthly fees in advance and excess usage they have incurred during the period is billed in arrears.
* A Service: The actual ADSL internet the customer uses.

=== Case 3 ===
* A Service Plan: 12 issues of Motocycle Australia Magazine (published monthly) costs subscribers $14.95 per issue.
* A Service Subscription: A business customer (Buildin' Bikes) has just ordered a subscription to this magazine. The first issue is not due out for another 2 weeks. The order has been placed, but the subscription will not become '''active''' until the first issue is sent to the customer.
* A Service: The physical magazines.
